Don Gullett, a standout major league pitcher who played for four consecutive World Series champions in the 1970s, died on Wednesday. The Cincinnati Reds, New York Yankees and Baseball Hall of Fame all paid tribute to Gullett in social media posts. Gullett went 109-50 with a 3.11 ERA in nine seasons with the Reds and Yankees. He then signed with New York in free agency, and the Yankees won it all in ‘77 and ’78. “Don dedicated 24 years to this franchise as a player, coach and minor league instructor," Reds owner Bob Castellini said in a team post on X.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Hall of Fame third baseman Brooks Robinson, whose deft glovework and folksy manner made him one of the most beloved and accomplished athletes in Baltimore history, has died. Robinson contributed an RBI single in the second game and became forever a part of World Series lore with his standout performance in Game 3. Sometimes, a new Hall of Fame class fits neatly together in baseball history. Jimmie Foxx and Mel Ott, 500-homer sluggers in the shadow of Babe Ruth, went in together in 1951. Johnny Bench and Carl Yastrzemski, one-city institutions who met in a sublime World Series, took their turn in 1989. Both reached the World Series twice, winning once. More than anything else, the pairing of McGriff and Rolen is a powerful reflection of the changing standards for baseball’s highest honor.
